Garage Door Repair Cost Guide: Every Common Repair

Published price ranges for every common garage door repair, what pushes a job to the high end, and how to make sure the price you're quoted is the price you pay.

By The Best Garage Door · Updated September 2026 · 5 min read

Quick answer: most garage door repairs cost about $150 to $350 nationally, according to both HomeGuide and Fixr, with Fixr reporting a $250 average. Service calls typically run $50 to $75 (Fixr). Spring and cable jobs usually fall in that main range; panel replacement and new openers cost more. Local prices vary with labor rates and your door, so treat national figures as a starting point.

Garage door repair pricing is confusing partly because so many companies won't quote over the phone, and partly because "repair" covers everything from a $100 sensor fix to a multi-part job on a heavy wood door. This guide pulls together what the major cost-tracking sites report for each common repair.

All figures below are third-party national estimates as published by HomeGuide, Fixr and This Old House at the time of writing (checked September 2026). They're not our prices. At The Best Garage Door, your technician confirms the exact price for your door before any work starts, and our pricing page lists our typical ranges.

Service call fee

Fixr puts the typical service-call or trip fee at $50 to $75 and hourly labor at $75 to $100. HomeGuide notes that "minimum service fees can apply." Ask two questions when you call:

  • Is the service call fee applied to the repair if I go ahead?
  • Is the quoted price the total, including parts and labor?

Springs

Broken springs are one of the most common repairs. HomeGuide lists torsion spring replacement (both springs) at $150 to $350, a torsion spring plus a new shaft at $200 to $400, and springs plus cables at $200 to $500. Converting old extension springs to a torsion system runs $400 to $800 or more. Fixr notes that the average homeowner pays about $250 for a broken torsion spring.

Heavy wood and carriage-house doors, which you still see on many older North Shore homes, need larger springs and push prices up. For a deeper look, see our spring replacement cost guide and spring repair.

Cables and drums

HomeGuide's cable page puts replacing both cables at $150 to $250 and cable tensioning or realignment at $100 to $200. Fixr lists a cable that came off at $100 to $200. None of the three sources lists a separate figure for drums; worn drums are usually replaced during a spring or cable job. See cable repair.

Rollers and hinges

Fixr puts roller replacement at $100 to $150 and bearings at $100 to $250. None of the sources we checked lists a hinge-only figure. Rollers are often upgraded to quieter nylon versions at the same time. See roller replacement and making a door quieter.

Off-track doors

HomeGuide lists realigning and repairing a door that came off its tracks at $200 to $350; Fixr says $100 to $300. The price climbs if track sections are bent and need replacement, or if a cable or spring failure caused the problem. Don't keep running an off-track door: see off-track repair.

Don't let a quote tempt you into DIY on springs or cables. These parts are under high tension and cause serious injuries. The savings aren't worth it.

Opener repair vs. replacement

HomeGuide puts opener repair at $100 to $200 and a new installed opener at $300 to $900. Fixr lists opener repair at $100 to $300, a circuit (logic) board at $150 to $400, and replacement at $300 to $940.

A rough rule: when a logic board plus labor approaches half the price of a new opener, and the opener is older, replacement is usually the smarter spend. See opener repair, our opener installation cost guide, and the LiftMaster error code guide to understand what your opener is reporting.

Panel replacement: can you replace one panel?

Often, yes. HomeGuide puts a single sectional panel at $300 to $900 installed (panel $150 to $400 plus labor). Glass panels run $400 to $1,000 or more. Minor dents can sometimes be repaired for $100 to $300.

The catch is matching. HomeGuide notes that "even if only one panel is damaged, replacing more panels or the whole door may be necessary for a good match." Clopay says replacement sections are available while a model is still in production, and that color may not be a perfect match. On a 20-year-old door that's been in the sun, a new panel can stand out. If several panels are damaged, compare the total against a new door in our new garage door cost guide and repair or replace guide.

Emergency and after-hours pricing

Fixr reports that emergency same-day work adds $100 to $300. HomeGuide lists after-hours, weekend or holiday cable service at $250 to $350 and notes that evening, weekend and holiday spring repairs carry premium charges. If your car isn't trapped and the door is closed and secure, a regular appointment is usually cheaper. If the door is stuck open, see emergency garage door repair.

What pushes a repair to the high end

  • Heavy wood, oversized or custom doors
  • Several failed parts at once (spring, cables and drums together)
  • High-cycle spring upgrades
  • Bent track or damaged sections after a car impact
  • Discontinued parts or doors
  • After-hours or emergency timing

How to avoid a surprise bill

  1. Get the total price before work starts, including parts, labor and the service call.
  2. Ask what's included: one spring or both, rollers, cables, a safety check.
  3. Be wary of a very low advertised price that's really just the trip fee.
  4. Ask to see worn parts before agreeing to add-ons.
  5. Ask about the warranty on parts and labor, in writing.
  6. Send a photo first. A clear picture often gets you a realistic range before anyone drives out.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to fix a garage door?
HomeGuide and Fixr both put most garage door repairs between about $150 and $350 nationally, with Fixr reporting a $250 national average. Complex jobs such as multiple parts, heavy doors or panel replacement cost more.
How much is a garage door service call?
Fixr reports a typical service-call fee of $50 to $75, and HomeGuide notes that minimum service fees can apply. Some companies apply the fee toward the repair; ask before booking.
Can you replace just one garage door panel?
Often, if the manufacturer still makes that model. HomeGuide puts a single sectional panel at $300 to $900 installed, but notes that replacing more panels or the whole door may be needed for a good match, especially on older or faded doors.
Is it worth repairing a garage door opener?
Often, yes. HomeGuide lists opener repair at $100 to $200 versus $300 to $900 for a new installed opener. If the opener is old, lacks safety sensors, or needs a logic board on a model near the end of its life, replacement can be the better value.
Do emergency garage door repairs cost more?
Usually. Fixr reports that emergency same-day work adds $100 to $300, and HomeGuide lists after-hours, weekend or holiday cable service at $250 to $350. If the door is closed and secure, a regular appointment usually costs less.
