LiftMaster Error Codes and Blinking Lights: What They Mean
Your opener is trying to tell you something. Here's how to read the blinking arrows, what each code family means, and which codes point to a door problem instead of the motor.

LiftMaster and Chamberlain are made by the same company, Chamberlain Group, and they share the same diagnostic system. The codes below come from Chamberlain Group's official support articles for garage door openers and wall-mount (jackshaft) operators. Not every code applies to every model, so check your owner's manual if a code isn't listed here.
How to read the code
Most newer LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers (the ones with a yellow learn button, Security+ 2.0) have up and down arrow lights on the motor unit. When there's a problem:
- Watch the up arrow and count its blinks. That's the first number.
- Then count the down arrow blinks. That's the second number.
- The pattern repeats, so watch it twice to be sure.
One up blink followed by six down blinks is code 1-6. On models without arrows, the small LED next to the learn button flashes the code instead, for example four flashes, a pause, then four more.
Openers connected to the myQ app may also show the code in the app, which saves you from standing on a ladder counting lights.
1-x codes: safety sensors and motor movement

Codes 1-1 and 1-2 are the most common and often the easiest to fix yourself. Our guide to garage door sensor lights walks through aligning the photo-eyes step by step.
Code 1-5 needs a closer look. Chamberlain's guidance splits it two ways. If the door moves 6 to 8 inches and then stops or reverses, the opener is meeting resistance: check for a locked door, binding in the tracks, or a broken spring. If you hear a single click or a hum and nothing moves, try moving the door by hand with the emergency release pulled (only if the door is closed and the springs are intact). If the door moves freely, the motor or logic board may be the issue.
2-x codes: logic board
Codes 2-1 through 2-5 point to the opener's logic board, its main circuit board. Chamberlain's first step is simple: unplug the opener for about five seconds, then plug it back in. A power surge or brief glitch can trigger these codes. If the code keeps returning, the board needs to be replaced. 3-x codes: board and accessory faults

A 3-5 code is worth taking seriously. Slack in a lift cable can mean the cable has come off its drum or a spring has lost tension. If the door is hanging unevenly, stop using it and read about cable repair.
4-x codes: the door is too hard to move
The 4-series codes are where many homeowners get the wrong idea. The opener isn't necessarily broken. It's reporting that the door took more force than expected, so it stopped or reversed to protect you and itself.

Chamberlain's own fixes for 4-1 include lubricating rollers and hinges and reprogramming travel limits. That's reasonable homeowner work. But if a 4-2 or 4-4 shows up on the way up, the most common real cause is a door that's gotten heavy because a spring is worn or broken.
5-5: the remote-close light
A 5-5 code means the door won't close from Timer-to-Close or the myQ app because a myQ-compatible remote light is required for unattended closing. Pair a compatible light, or turn off app schedules and close the door from a remote or wall button. Read more in our smart opener guide.
Lights flashing 10 times or 5 times
- Opener lights flash 10 times and the door won't close: a safety sensor problem, per Chamberlain. Older openers let you hold the wall button down to force the door closed. Chamberlain notes that openers and replacement logic boards made after February 3, 2022 no longer have that override, so the sensors have to be fixed.
- Opener beeps and lights flash 5 times: the door hit something and reversed. Check for obstructions and see door opens then reverses.
- Beeping every 2 or 30 seconds: usually battery backup. See why your opener is beeping or blinking.
When the code means a spring or cable, not the opener
Here's the practical rule we use on service calls: if a code says the door is hard to move (1-5 with the door stopping a few inches up, 1-6, 3-5, 4-2 or 4-4), check the door before blaming the opener.
- Look for a gap in the torsion spring above the door
- Look for a loose, frayed or unwound cable at either bottom corner
- Check whether the door sits crooked or a roller has left the track
- Make sure a manual slide lock isn't engaged
