Garage Door Sensor Light Yellow, Green or Blinking? What It Means

When the little lights by the floor aren't both glowing, your door won't close. Here's what each light means and how to fix most sensor problems in about ten minutes.

Quick answer: on LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers, a steady amber (yellow) light and a steady green light mean the sensors are working. If the amber is on but the green is off or flickering, the sensors are misaligned or blocked. On Genie openers, the sending eye is red and the receiver is green, and a blinking red light is a diagnostic code. Most sensor problems are fixed by clearing the path, cleaning the lenses and realigning.

Your garage door's safety sensors, also called photo-eyes, sit a few inches off the floor on each side of the door opening. One sends an invisible beam of light across the doorway. The other receives it. If anything breaks that beam while the door is closing, the opener stops and reverses.

When the opener can't see a clean beam, it assumes something is in the way. The result is the most common "broken" garage door call there is: the door goes down a few inches, reverses, and the opener lights flash.

Genie Safe-T-Beam

Genie's sensors use a red light on the sending side and a green light on the receiving side. The red light also blinks diagnostic codes:

Aligning photo-eyes step by step

  1. Clear the doorway. Trash cans, bikes, boxes, leaves, even a spider web across the lens can block the beam.
  2. Clean both lenses with a soft, dry cloth. Dust and cobwebs build up fast at floor level.
  3. Check which light is off. The sending light should be on. If it's off too, skip to wiring below.
  4. Loosen the wing nut on the receiving (green) sensor bracket just enough that the sensor can pivot.
  5. Aim it slowly at the sending sensor, moving up, down and side to side until the green light comes on and stays steady.
  6. Tighten the wing nut without bumping the sensor out of position.
  7. Test the door. Close it with the wall button and watch for a full close.
  8. Test the safety reverse. Roll a ball or pass an object through the beam while the door is closing. It should stop and reverse. Then do the contact test the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends: lay a 2x4 flat on the floor in the doorway; the door should reverse when it touches the board.

If the brackets themselves are bent, which often happens after a car, lawn mower or snow blower bumps them, straighten or replace the bracket first. A sensor that's been knocked loose will drift out of line again.

Sun glare in the morning or late afternoon

If your door refuses to close only at a certain time of day, the sun is a likely suspect. When strong light shines straight into the receiving sensor, it can drown out the beam. It's especially common on garages facing east or west.

  • Swap the sensors. Moving the receiving sensor to the shaded side of the door often fixes it. The wires may need to be rerouted.
  • Add a sun shield or a short tube around the receiving sensor to block direct light.
  • Close the door a different way for now and plan the fix. Don't tape over or remove the sensors.

Wiring and staple damage

If both lights are off, or they flicker when you touch the wire, look at the thin low-voltage wire that runs from each sensor up to the opener.

  • Staples driven through the wire, a common cause of shorts
  • Wire chewed by mice or squirrels, especially in detached garages
  • Wire pinched behind shelving or crushed by a door track
  • Loose or corroded connections at the back of the opener
  • Wires reversed at the terminals (Chamberlain notes this can trigger code 1-2)

Chamberlain suggests a simple test: hold the two sensors close together, pointed at each other. If both lights come on, the sensors are probably fine and the wire between them and the opener is the problem.

Don't bypass the sensors. Taping the eyes together, mounting them on the ceiling or cutting them out takes away the only thing that stops the door from closing on a child, a pet or your car. Federal rules (16 CFR Part 1211) have required a second entrapment protection device, such as photo-eyes, on residential openers made since 1993. Openers with monitored sensors are designed not to close normally when a sensor is missing or faulty.

Why holding the wall button doesn't always work

On many older openers, pressing and holding the wall button would force the door closed even with bad sensors. Chamberlain notes that its openers and replacement logic boards made after February 3, 2022 no longer allow that override. If you've recently replaced a board or opener and the old trick stopped working, that's why.

When to call a technician

Sensor fixes are among the few garage door repairs most homeowners can do themselves. Call for help if:

  • Both lights stay off after checking the wire and connections
  • A sensor lens is cracked or the sensor is damaged
  • The wire needs to be replaced along a long or hard-to-reach run
  • The door reverses even with both lights steady, which points to a force or travel setting problem or a door issue
  • You'd like the sensors moved away from sun glare permanently
