Garage Door Reverses When Closing? Causes and Fixes
Door starts moving, then stops and goes back the other way? The opener thinks something is wrong. Here's how to figure out what it's reacting to, and when the real problem is the door itself.

Why openers reverse on purpose
A garage door that reverses when closing is usually reacting to blocked or misaligned safety sensors, a close-limit or force setting that's off, a door that binds in the track, or a weak spring. In other words, it's usually doing its job. Openers are built to stop and reverse when they sense something in the way, either through the photo-eye safety sensors near the floor or by feeling extra resistance on the motor. The question is what the opener is reacting to. Sometimes it's a small alignment issue. Sometimes it's a warning that the door itself has a problem.
When does it reverse?
- Right after it starts closing: safety sensors are blocked, dirty or misaligned
- Partway down, at the same spot every time: binding in the track, a bent section or a bad roller
- Just as it touches the floor: close-limit set too far, or a close-force setting that's too sensitive
- A few inches after it starts opening: a broken or weak spring, or a door that's out of balance
- Only in cold weather or late afternoon: stiff lubricant, a sticking bottom seal, or sun shining into a sensor
The most likely causes
Safety sensors. The two small sensors on either side of the door must see each other clearly. A bumped bracket, a cobweb, dirt on the lens or a loose wire makes the opener think something is under the door. Limit settings. The travel limits tell the opener where fully open and fully closed are. If the close limit is set lower than the floor, the door presses into the ground, senses resistance and reverses. A new bottom seal, a settled garage floor or old mechanical limit switches that drift can all cause this.
Force settings. The force setting controls how much resistance the opener tolerates. Too sensitive and the door reverses at the slightest drag. But force is a safety setting, and turning it up to stop the reversing is a common and risky mistake.
A door that binds. Worn rollers, a bent track, loose track brackets or a warped wood panel create friction the opener feels as an obstruction. Heavy wood doors on older Tudor and colonial homes in Kensington and Great Neck Estates are especially prone to this as their hardware ages.
A weak or broken spring. If the door reverses shortly after it starts to open, suspect the springs. Without full spring support, the opener is trying to lift most of the door's weight, and it trips its safety limit. What you can safely check
- Sensors: wipe both lenses, clear the area, and confirm both indicator lights are steady
- Track: look for debris, dents or bends, and clear anything in the door's path
- Balance test: with the door closed, unplug the opener and pull the emergency release. Lift the door halfway by hand and let go carefully. A balanced door stays put. If it drops or shoots up, the springs need attention.
- Reconnect: close the door by hand, plug the opener back in and run it. The trolley should re-engage.
- Auto-reverse test: place a roll of paper towels under the door and close it. It should reverse on contact.
Only do the balance test if the springs and cables look intact. If you see a gap in a spring or a loose cable, skip it and call.
