How Long Do Garage Door Springs Last?

Spring life isn't measured in years. It's measured in cycles. Here's how to figure out how long yours will last, and whether high-cycle springs are worth it for your household.

Quick answer: most standard garage door springs are rated for about 10,000 cycles. For a typical household, that's roughly 7 to 10 years. Use your garage door a lot more than average, and a standard spring may last only about 3 years.

Garage door springs don't wear out on a calendar. They wear out with use. Every time the door opens and closes, the steel coils twist or stretch and relax again. After enough of those cycles, the metal fatigues and the spring snaps, usually with a loud bang.

That's why two identical doors on the same street in Great Neck can have springs that fail years apart. One family uses the garage as a storage room. The other drives in and out six times a day. Here's how to figure out where you fall.

What a "cycle" is

One cycle is one full open and one full close. Springs are manufactured to a cycle rating, which is roughly how many cycles they're expected to handle before they break. Common ratings:

  • About 10,000 cycles: the standard spring that comes on most residential doors.
  • About 20,000 cycles: a common high-cycle upgrade.
  • 50,000 cycles and up: heavy-duty springs, often used for very frequent use.

A cycle rating is an expected life, not a guarantee. Some springs break earlier, some go longer. But it's the best way to estimate how long yours will last.

The math: cycles per day to years of life

To estimate spring life, divide the cycle rating by the number of cycles you use per year:

Years = cycle rating ÷ (cycles per day × 365)

For example, a 10,000-cycle spring on a door used 4 times a day: 10,000 ÷ (4 × 365) = 10,000 ÷ 1,460 = about 6.8 years.

Estimates based on the cycle rating alone, rounded to one decimal. Real-world life also depends on rust, sizing, lubrication and door balance.

Two things stand out. First, a household using the door 8 to 10 times a day can go through a standard spring in about 3 years. Second, the very long numbers for high-cycle springs at low use are theoretical. Over decades, rust and the rest of the door's hardware usually become the limit before the cycle count does.

How to count your cycles

Most people underestimate. Think through a normal weekday and weekend:

  • Each car leaving and coming back is 2 cycles.
  • Kids heading out on bikes, taking out the trash, or getting something from the garage freezer each add a cycle.
  • If the garage is how your family enters the house, count every trip.

A two-driver household where everyone uses the garage door as the front door can easily hit 6 to 10 cycles a day. If you have a smart opener app that logs door activity, a week of history takes the guesswork out of it.

What shortens spring life

Salt air and moisture

Rust creates rough spots and friction between coils, and those spots become weak points. Homes near the water in Kings Point, Sands Point, Port Washington and along Manhasset Bay see this more than inland houses. Damp, unheated garages speed it up too. Coated or galvanized springs hold up better in these conditions.

Springs sized wrong

A spring picked off a generic chart instead of matched to the door's real weight has to work harder on every cycle. Heavy wood and carriage-house doors on older North Shore homes are especially easy to get wrong. An undersized spring wears out early and leaves the opener doing extra lifting.

A door that's out of balance

If a door won't stay put when it's halfway open, the springs and opener are fighting each other. That strain shortens the life of both.

No maintenance

Dry springs grind against themselves. Light lubrication a couple of times a year reduces that friction and helps the spring reach its rated life.

Warning signs a spring is near the end

  • Visible rust or flaking on the coils
  • A gap forming between coils on a torsion spring
  • The door feels heavier when you lift it by hand with the opener disconnected
  • The door won't stay in place when opened halfway
  • The opener strains, slows down or stops partway up
  • Squeaking or grinding from the spring area when the door moves

Look, don't touch. Checking springs by sight is safe. Adjusting, loosening or removing them is not. A wound spring holds enough energy to cause serious injury.

Standard or high-cycle: which should you choose?

Use the table above with your own cycle count. A few general guidelines:

  • 2 to 3 cycles a day: standard springs usually make sense. You'll likely get 9 years or more.
  • 4 to 6 cycles a day: it's a judgment call. High-cycle springs cost more up front, but can save you a future replacement if you plan to stay in the house.
  • 6 or more cycles a day: high-cycle springs are usually the better value.

Make your springs last longer

  1. Lubricate twice a year with a garage door lubricant, not a heavy grease.
  2. Test the balance every few months: disconnect the opener with the door closed, lift it halfway, and let go. It should stay put.
  3. Watch for rust, especially if you live near the water.
