Can You Open a Garage Door With a Broken Spring?

A loud bang, then a door that won't go up. Here's how to confirm a spring is broken, why you shouldn't force the door, and what to do if your car is stuck inside.

Quick answer: you can sometimes lift a garage door with a broken spring, but it isn't safe to do casually. The springs carry most of the door's weight, and without them the door can be far too heavy to control and can drop suddenly. Don't use the opener. If you truly need your car out, follow the careful steps below, or leave the door closed and call a technician.

Garage door springs are counterweights. When they're working, a door that weighs well over 100 pounds feels light enough to lift with one hand, and the opener only has to guide it. When a spring snaps, that balance is gone. The door itself hasn't changed weight, but now nothing is holding it up.

That's why a door with a broken spring is one of the few garage door problems where the right move is usually to stop and wait.

How to tell a spring is broken

Most homes on Long Island have torsion springs: one or two large coils on a steel bar just above the closed door. Older and lighter doors may have extension springs running along the horizontal tracks on each side.

  • A loud bang from the garage, often sounding like a gunshot or something heavy falling
  • A gap in the coil: a torsion spring that has split into two pieces with a few inches of space between them
  • The door won't lift, or the opener hums, strains and stops a few inches up
  • The door feels extremely heavy when you try to lift it by hand
  • Loose or dangling cables at the bottom corners of the door
  • The door goes up crooked or one side rises faster than the other
  • An extension spring hanging loose or stretched out, held only by its safety cable

You can check all of this by looking. You don't need to touch the spring, and you shouldn't.

Why the opener can't lift the door

It's a common assumption that the opener does the lifting. It doesn't. The motor is designed to move a door that the springs have already balanced. Ask it to lift the full dead weight and a few things can happen:

  • The opener strains, then stops or reverses because it senses too much force.
  • The top section of the door bends where the opener arm attaches.
  • Plastic drive gears strip, turning a spring repair into a spring and opener repair.
  • Cables, already under uneven load, jump off their drums or snap, and the door can come off track.

Is it ever safe to lift the door manually?

Sometimes, with the right conditions. A single-car steel door with one broken spring out of two is a very different job from a 16-foot solid wood carriage door on an older Kings Point or Great Neck Estates home. Ask yourself:

Never pull the emergency release cord while the door is open if you suspect a broken spring. Once the door is disconnected from the opener, nothing holds it up, and it can fall fast. Keep children, pets and cars clear of the doorway.

Getting your car out safely

If the door is fully closed, the cables look intact and it's a standard steel door, this is the most careful way to do it:

  1. Unplug the opener so nobody presses a button mid-lift.
  2. Pull the emergency release (the red cord hanging from the opener rail) with the door fully closed.
  3. Get a second adult. Grip the door from the bottom handles or the bottom section, never between the sections where fingers can be pinched.
  4. Lift slowly and evenly. If it feels too heavy to control, lower it and stop.
  5. Secure the door open before anyone walks or drives under it. Locking pliers or C-clamps clamped tightly on the tracks just below the bottom rollers on both sides will keep it from sliding down.
  6. Back the car out with a spotter watching the door.
  7. Lower the door together, slowly, after removing the clamps, and leave the opener unplugged.

If any step feels wrong, stop. A day without the car costs less than an injury or a door that falls on a hood.

Why DIY spring replacement is dangerous

Online videos make spring replacement look like a 30-minute job. What they don't show well is the energy involved. A torsion spring is wound tight enough to lift the door, and that stored force is released through the winding cone and bars in your hands. Common DIY problems include:

  • Using screwdrivers instead of proper winding bars, which can slip out of the cone
  • Buying springs by guesswork instead of measuring wire size, inside diameter, length and wind direction
  • Loosening the set screws on a wound spring
  • Touching the bottom brackets, which are connected to the cables under full tension

The Door & Access Systems Manufacturers Association (DASMA), the industry's trade group, warns that springs are under high tension and should only be adjusted by qualified individuals, and that bottom brackets are under extreme tension. Chamberlain's own instructions say to stop and call a professional if a door feels unusually heavy, won't stay open or slams shut. We agree.

What a professional spring replacement includes

A proper spring repair is more than swapping a coil. It should include:

  • Weighing or calculating the door so the new springs match it
  • Replacing both springs on a two-spring door, or at least giving you the price for both
  • An option for high-cycle springs if your household uses the garage heavily
  • Inspecting cables, drums, bearings and rollers, which often wear alongside springs
  • Balancing the door so it stays put when stopped halfway
  • Checking the opener's force settings and safety reverse afterward
