Smart Garage Door Openers: myQ, Alternatives and What Changed
Open the garage from your phone, get an alert when it's left open, let a delivery in. Here's what smart openers really do, what changed with myQ, and how to choose if you use Google, Alexa or Apple.

Smart features used to be a premium add-on. Now they're built into many mid-range belt-drive and wall-mount openers. What changed is how well those openers play with the rest of your smart home, and that depends heavily on the brand.
This guide is current as of September 2026. Integrations change, so confirm with the manufacturer's current compatibility list before you buy.
What "smart" adds
- Remote control and status: open, close and see whether the door is open from anywhere with an internet connection
- Alerts: notifications when the door opens, closes or is left open
- Timer-to-close and schedules: the door closes automatically after a set time or at a set hour
- Guest access: share access with family, a dog walker or a contractor without handing out a remote
- In-garage delivery: through services such as Amazon Key and Walmart+ InHome on supported openers
- Cameras: some newer openers have a built-in camera so you can see the garage in the app
- Car integration: open the door from your car's screen on supported vehicles
myQ and third-party integrations: what changed

What does work officially with myQ, per Chamberlain's partner list: Amazon Key, Walmart+ InHome, Ring, IFTTT, Apple Watch (through the myQ app), security platforms such as Vivint, Alarm.com and Resideo Total Connect, pro installer systems like Control4 and Crestron, and car brands including Tesla, Honda and Acura, Kia, Nissan and INFINITI, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and Mitsubishi.

If voice control through Google or Apple matters to you, don't assume a "smart" opener will fit in. Look for that platform's logo on the manufacturer's current compatibility page, not a retailer listing.
Adding smart control to an older opener
You don't always need a new opener. Options, from least to most invasive:
- The manufacturer's add-on hub. Chamberlain and Genie both sell smart controllers for many of their existing openers. Genie's Aladdin Connect, for example, has a retrofit kit. Compatibility is model-specific.
- A third-party retrofit controller. These typically wire into the opener's wall button terminals and use a sensor on the door to report whether it's open. Many advertise Google, Alexa or Apple Home support. They're less likely to work with newer encrypted wall-control systems, so confirm your opener is on the supported list.
- A new smart opener. The cleanest option if your opener is old, noisy, lacks battery backup, or needs opener repair anyway.
Before adding smart control to an older opener, make sure it has working photo-eye safety sensors. Federal rules for unattended closing (16 CFR 1211.14) require an alarm and flashing light for at least five seconds before the door moves, limit the feature to sectional doors, and expect the safety system to be working. Security basics
- Use a unique password for the opener app and turn on two-factor authentication if it's offered.
- Share access through the app (guest users) instead of sharing your login. Remove people when they no longer need access.
- Erase old remotes when you move in or lose one. Our remote programming guide shows how.
- Know your security technology. Rolling-code systems (Security+, Security+ 2.0, Genie Intellicode) change the code each use. If your learn button is green, your opener predates rolling codes on Chamberlain's timeline.
- Turn on open-door alerts and consider a timer-to-close so the garage isn't left open overnight.
- Lock the door between the garage and the house. Smart features don't replace basic habits.
- Keep Wi-Fi reliable in the garage. A weak signal means missed alerts.
